Vodka
Beverages · Alcohol
A 30 ml shot of vodka is rated green, with all six FODMAP groups recording zero. The reason is the still rather than the recipe: distillation carries alcohol and water over as vapour and leaves the sugars behind in the pot. Vodka made from wheat or rye arrives with no fructans in it. The mixer is the whole variable.

Breakdown for 1 shot
Is vodka low FODMAP?
FODMAPs are carbohydrates, and carbohydrates do not evaporate. A still is heated to the point where ethanol and water leave the wash as vapour, and that point sits far below anything that would lift a sugar molecule with them; the vapour is condensed back into liquid and everything fermentable stays in the pot to be thrown out. That is why the base material drops out of the question entirely. Wheat vodka, rye vodka, potato vodka and grape vodka all reach the glass with the same zeros across fructans, GOS, excess fructose, lactose, sorbitol and mannitol.
Vodka and IBS: what to know
That mechanism answers the question wheat avoiders usually arrive with. Gluten is a protein and fructans are a carbohydrate, and neither of them boils, so a spirit distilled from wheat carries neither into the bottle, which is why plain spirits are generally accepted on a gluten-free diet even when the label names a grain. Flavoured vodkas are a different product, because whatever gives them raspberry or vanilla goes in after the still. The other thing a shot does not describe is the glass around it: 30 ml of spirit in a tall tumbler means the other 200 ml decides your drink.
Gut-friendly ways to eat vodka
The drink is the mixer. Soda water, tonic water and fresh lime all hold green entries, so a vodka soda or a vodka lime and soda needs no arithmetic. Juice is where it turns. Apple juice is rated red at half a cup and amber at a splash of two tablespoons, pear juice is rated red at those same two tablespoons, and mango juice is rated red at a quarter cup, which is less than a bar pours. Orange juice is rated green at half a cup, 125 ml.
Frequently asked questions
Is vodka gluten free if it’s made from wheat?
The distillation step is what settles it. Gluten is a large protein and it cannot travel in vapour, so it stays behind in the wash along with the grain’s fructans while the spirit comes across. That is the basis on which plain distilled spirits are treated as gluten free even when made from wheat or rye. Flavoured and sweetened bottles are the exception, since their additions arrive after distilling.
Can I drink vodka with IBS?
On FODMAPs there is nothing in it: the 30 ml shot records zero across all six groups. Alcohol is its own matter, and a shot of spirit is not a smaller drink than a glass of wine, only a smaller volume. What most often decides how a vodka drink sits is the mixer beside it, so that is the part worth choosing deliberately.
Which mixers are low FODMAP with vodka?
Soda water, tonic water, fresh lime and cranberry juice all carry green entries at their tested mixer serves, and orange juice is rated green at half a cup. The ones to leave out are apple juice, pear juice and mango juice, none of which has a green pour anywhere in its data, plus cola made with high fructose corn syrup and the sweetened premix cans.
Are flavoured vodkas low FODMAP?
This entry covers plain vodka only, and there is no tested serve here for a flavoured bottle. Everything that makes one taste of citrus, berry or caramel is added once distillation has finished, which is precisely the step that removed the sugars in the first place. Sweetened vodka liqueurs work the same way, and Kahlúa and Baileys both sit outside the green band in this guide.
