Wine (white, dry)
Beverages · Alcohol
A 150 ml glass of dry white wine is rated green, with none of the six FODMAP groups registering. The word carrying that rating is dry, and white is the colour where dry is hardest to be sure of: one wine list runs from bone dry to dessert sweet under a single heading. Knowing which style names mean sugar is the practical skill.

Is wine (white, dry) low FODMAP?
What separates a dry wine from a sweet one is residual sugar, the grape sugar still in the bottle when fermentation stops or is stopped. A bone-dry white finishes with almost none, and the tested glass shows it. The label words worth learning are the ones meaning dry in whichever language is on the front: trocken in German, sec in French, seco in Spanish, secco in Italian. Grape variety will not tell you, since riesling is made both ways from the same fruit. Dry riesling holds a green entry here, while moscato and dessert wine are rated red.
Wine (white, dry) and IBS: what to know
Two things about white are worth separating from the rating. The first is the pour. A tested glass is 150 ml, a restaurant large is closer to 250 ml, and a bottle holds five of the measured size, so the figure describes a glass rather than an evening. The second is sulphites. Whites generally carry more added sulphur dioxide than reds do, since they have no tannin doing preservative work, and that is the usual explanation offered when white disagrees with someone. Sulphites are not a FODMAP and nothing on this page measures them, so a low-sulphite bottle is answering a different question.
Gut-friendly ways to eat wine (white, dry)
White wine does a second job that red rarely does: it goes in the pan. Alcohol boils off in a risotto, a mussel pot or a pan sauce, but sugar does not, so a dry bottle is the one to cook with and a sweet one will only concentrate as the liquid reduces. What decides whether the finished dish suits you usually sits underneath the wine, since a white wine sauce nearly always begins with onion, garlic or shallot softened in butter. Plain risotto is rated red here for that reason, and a low FODMAP risotto green.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a white wine is dry?
Look for the style word rather than the grape. Trocken, sec, seco and secco all mean dry on their own labels, while brut belongs to sparkling wine rather than still. Failing that, alcohol is a rough proxy: fermentation turns sugar into alcohol, so a white at twelve or thirteen per cent has usually finished the job, and a notably low-alcohol white has often been stopped early with its sugar left in.
Is sauvignon blanc low FODMAP?
Yes, at the tested glass. Sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, chablis and unoaked chardonnay are made dry as a matter of course, and dry white is rated here as one entry rather than variety by variety. The names to check before pouring are those made in both styles, riesling and chenin blanc especially, where one grape covers a bone-dry bottle and a sweet one.
Can I cook with white wine on a low FODMAP diet?
Yes, and a dry bottle is the right choice for it. Reducing a sauce drives off alcohol and water and leaves everything else more concentrated, which costs nothing when there is almost no sugar to concentrate and rather more with an off-dry wine. Avoid anything sold as cooking wine unless the full ingredient list is readable, and remember the sauce is usually built on alliums before the wine arrives.
Are sulphites in white wine a problem for IBS?
They are not a FODMAP, and none of this guide’s ratings track them. Sulphur dioxide is added as a preservative and also occurs naturally during fermentation, so no wine is entirely without it and organic bottles are lower rather than free. If white consistently disagrees with you where a dry red does not, sulphites are one candidate among several, and the size of the pour is worth ruling out first.
