Whiskey / Whisky

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Whiskey is the spirit where the rating usually covers the whole drink. A 30 ml shot records nothing in any of the six groups, and unlike a spirit that arrives buried in juice, whiskey is mostly drunk neat, with ice or with water. Bourbon, rye, malt and Irish all land in the same place.

Is whiskey / whisky low FODMAP?

The grain question answers itself at the still. Only alcohol and water make the crossing from the wash into the spirit, and the fermentable carbohydrates stay behind with everything else that cannot evaporate. So bourbon built mostly on corn, rye whiskey, a single malt made from malted barley and an Irish blend all land in the same place: no fructans, no GOS, no excess fructose, and nothing in the lactose, sorbitol or mannitol columns either. Cask, age and peat move the colour and the flavour. None of them puts a sugar back.

Whiskey / Whisky and IBS: what to know

Two things sit outside the shot, and both are additions rather than distillates. Flavoured bottles are the first: honey whiskey is rated red, and it earns that on the honey rather than on anything the still produced, since a teaspoon of honey alone carries 2 g of excess fructose. The second is the drink built around the spirit, where a hot toddy is rated red for exactly the same reason. One thing worth knowing about pace: 30 ml of spirit and a 150 ml glass of white wine hold roughly equal alcohol, so the small glass is not the small drink.

Gut-friendly ways to eat whiskey / whisky

Neat, with water or over ice is the version the data describes, and the few drops that open up a malt change nothing in these columns. The sweet end is where whiskey drinks go wrong: cola, ginger ale, cordial-based sour mixes and anything finished with honey or a fruit liqueur. Among the classics, an old fashioned and a whiskey sour both hold green entries, while an Irish coffee sits at amber on its cream. For length in the glass, soda water and fresh lemon juice are green, and simple syrup, which is sugar and water and nothing else, is rated green where honey is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is whiskey gluten free?

For the same reason it is low FODMAP: nothing dissolved or solid leaves the still with the spirit, so neither gluten nor the grain’s fructans reach the bottle. That holds for barley, rye, wheat and corn mashes alike. Some people prefer to avoid grain spirits regardless of the chemistry, and bottles distilled from corn are easy enough to find if you would rather not think about it.

Is bourbon low FODMAP?

Yes, on the same shot as any other whiskey. Bourbon is a corn-led mash aged in new charred oak, and neither the corn nor the barrel contributes a fermentable carbohydrate to the finished spirit. Rye, Tennessee whiskey and Scotch come out identically. Where bourbon differs in practice is company: it is the whiskey most often poured over cola or into a sweetened sour mix.

Can I drink whiskey with IBS?

The shot records zero in all six groups, so there is nothing in it for gut bacteria to work on. Alcohol is a separate matter that the rating does not speak to, and a spirit delivers it in a small, strong volume that is easy to lose count of. How a glass sits usually comes down to how quickly it is drunk and what is in the stomach at the time.

Which whiskey drinks are high FODMAP?

The ones sweetened after the bottle is opened. Honey whiskey and a hot toddy are both rated red on honey, and a white Russian is rated red on its cream and coffee liqueur, though that one starts from vodka. Sour mixes made from bottled cordial rather than fresh lemon are the quiet case, because the label seldom says what sweetened them.
