Radish
Vegetables · Root Vegetables
Two radishes, 30 g, is the serve that has been tested, and it is rated green on 0.03 g of fructans and 0.02 g of GOS. Two is fewer than it sounds. A supermarket bunch holds fifteen or more, and a handful sliced thin across a salad passes the measured amount without ever looking like a portion of vegetables.

Breakdown for 2 radishes
Is radish low FODMAP?
Both groups that appear are down at trace level, 0.03 g of fructans and 0.02 g of GOS against a line that starts at 0.1 g for each, with lactose, excess fructose, sorbitol and mannitol reading zero. The pepperiness is worth separating from all of that. A radish tastes hot because breaking the cell wall triggers a reaction that produces a mustard-family compound on the spot, which is a defence chemical rather than a sugar, and nothing in your large intestine ferments it. Bite and FODMAP load are simply unrelated measurements.
Radish and IBS: what to know
That distinction is useful because plenty of people quietly avoid anything sharp-tasting after a bad year, assuming heat and irritation travel together. On the fermentation side they do not. What is fair to say is that strongly pungent raw food does not suit every gut for other reasons, reflux among them, and if raw radish leaves you uncomfortable while cooked vegetables do not, that is worth noticing rather than arguing with. The serve is the other constraint: two radishes is a small measured amount, so a salad built around them needs cucumber, green leaves or carrot doing most of the bulk.
Gut-friendly ways to eat radish
Slice them as thin as you can manage, ideally on a mandolin, and the heat spreads across a whole plate instead of arriving in one mouthful. Salted and left for ten minutes they soften slightly and lose their sharpest edge, which suits sandwiches and tacos. Roasting changes them completely: the pungency burns off and they come out mild and sweet, not far from a roasted turnip, which is a fair use for a bunch going soft in the drawer. A quick pickle in vinegar, sugar and salt keeps for a week. The rating covers the root, not the leafy tops.
Frequently asked questions
How many radishes can I eat on a low FODMAP diet?
Two is the number with a green rating behind it, which is a garnish rather than a side dish. Anything past that has not been measured, so it is untested rather than known to be a problem. Given how small the tested amount is, radish works best as one crunchy element among several in a bowl instead of the vegetable you build the plate on.
Does the peppery taste mean radishes will irritate IBS?
Not in the way a FODMAP does. That heat is a mustard oil released when you cut or chew the root, and it is neither fermentable nor a trigger for the gas and distension this diet is built around. Some people do find sharp raw flavours uncomfortable for unrelated reasons, and if you are one of them, roasting removes almost all of it while the rating stays where it is.
Are cooked radishes low FODMAP?
Yes. Heat does not create fermentable carbohydrate, so roasting, braising or throwing them into a soup leaves the profile as it is, and boiling can shift a little of the water-soluble fructan content into the cooking water. What cooking changes is the flavour and the bite, turning something sharp and crisp into something soft and mellow, closer to a small turnip than to the raw radish it started as.
What can I put in a salad instead of onion?
Radish is one of the better answers, because what a raw onion actually contributed was a sharp bite rather than sweetness, and thin slices of radish give you that back. Build the rest from spring onion greens, cherry tomatoes and cucumber, dress it with lemon and olive oil, and the only thing missing is the ingredient that was causing the trouble.
