Lemon Juice

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Two tablespoons of lemon juice, 30 ml, is rated green, and no FODMAP group registers a figure at that amount. What matters more in a low FODMAP kitchen is what acid does: when a dish tastes flat because the onion and garlic are missing, a squeeze of lemon is the fix you can keep reaching for without doing arithmetic.

Is lemon juice low FODMAP?

Sourness and fermentability are two different things, which is why something this sharp reads as nothing at all on a FODMAP panel. Fructans, polyols and the rest are carbohydrates; the pucker in lemon juice comes from acid, which is not a fermentable carbohydrate. Only one pour has been measured, 30 ml, so that is the figure to quote, and it is already more than most recipes ask for. A dressing for two people takes about half of it.

Lemon Juice and IBS: what to know

Lemon juice tends to get blamed for meals it only dressed. It arrives on salads, on fish, over roast vegetables, and it is the last thing you added, so it is the thing you remember; the load usually sat in the onion underneath, where one chopped tablespoon, 10 g, already carries 0.4 g of fructans. Bottled juice is the other thing to check, since most brands add a preservative and some add sweetener, both of which are named on the label. If sharp food gives you reflux, that is a separate mechanism from fermentation and it responds to how much you pour.

Gut-friendly ways to eat lemon juice

Use it at the end. Long simmering flattens the brightness, so a spoonful stirred in off the heat does more than the same spoonful added at the start. Three parts olive oil to one part juice, salt, pepper and a handful of torn basil is a dressing that needs no allium in it at all. Acid is also what cuts fat: a rich pan sauce, fried fish or roast potatoes all read as heavy until you squeeze something sour over them. Keep the fruit on the bench rather than in the fridge, since a cold lemon gives up half its juice.

Frequently asked questions

Is bottled lemon juice low FODMAP?

The measured pour is fresh juice, 2 tablespoons, with nothing on the panel, and squeezed-from-concentrate versions are the same juice reconstituted. What changes is everything else in the bottle: most add a preservative, and some add sugar or a sweetener. Lemon cordial and lemon drink are a different product again, built on syrup with a little juice in it. Read the ingredients rather than the front of the label.

How much lemon juice can I put in a dish?

Two tablespoons is the amount that has been measured and it came back empty, which is roughly the juice of one small lemon and more than a dressing for two normally takes. Larger pours are untested rather than known to be a problem, so there is no reason to ration it on FODMAP grounds. Past a point the limit is taste: a sauce turns sour long before anything else happens.

Can I use lemon juice instead of vinegar?

In a dressing, yes, though they are not the same flavour: lemon is floral and fades within a day, vinegar is blunter and keeps. Both are quiet on FODMAPs. Apple cider vinegar is rated green at the same 2 tablespoons, and balsamic is green at 1.5 tablespoons while carrying a trace of fructose, 0.05 g, since it starts life as grape must. Use lemon where you want lift and vinegar where you want bite.

My low FODMAP cooking tastes flat. Will lemon juice fix it?

Partly. Acid supplies lift, and it is the lever people forget, but flatness after giving up onion and garlic is usually three faults at once: not enough salt, not enough browning, and no savoury depth. Get colour on the meat or vegetables first, season properly, add something with umami such as soy sauce or parmesan, then finish with the juice. Acid last is the order that works.
