Lime Juice

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Lime juice is rated green at 2 tablespoons, 30 ml, and no group on the panel returns a figure. The useful part is where that puts you: lime, chilli, fish sauce and fresh herbs are the backbone of Thai, Vietnamese and Mexican dressings, and not one of those four is an allium. Cuisines written off as impossible on this diet mostly are not.

Is lime juice low FODMAP?

There is very little in lime juice for a gut to work on. Squeezing takes the liquid and leaves the skin, pith and seeds behind in your hand, and what comes out is mostly water, acid and a small amount of aromatic oil. That is why a 30 ml pour reads as empty while still tasting like a great deal. One pour has been measured and no more, so 2 tablespoons is what the data describes; bigger pours are simply unmeasured rather than ruled out.

Lime Juice and IBS: what to know

The lime is rarely the problem; the bottle it arrives with usually is. Thai curry pastes, stir-fry sauces, taco kits and most supermarket guacamole are built on garlic, shallot or onion, and a squeeze at the table does not undo that. Sweet chilli sauce is the quieter example, carrying 0.15 g of excess fructose in 2 teaspoons, 10 g, from the sugar rather than the chilli. Restaurant food is the harder case, since the dressing was whisked in the kitchen long before it reached you, so ask what went into it rather than asking for it on the side.

Gut-friendly ways to eat lime juice

Learn one ratio and you can cook off it all week: two parts lime juice, two parts fish sauce, one part sugar, chilli to taste. That dresses rice noodles, grilled chicken, prawns, cucumber and shredded cabbage, and it needs no garlic anywhere in it. Lime goes in off the heat, because the perfume sits in a volatile oil that a simmering pot drives straight off; juice stirred into a curry at the start has stopped doing anything by the time the bowl reaches the table. Squeeze it over the food, not into the pan.

Frequently asked questions

Is lime juice low FODMAP in drinks and cocktails?

The juice itself is quiet: 2 tablespoons registers nothing, and a wedge squeezed into soda water is a fraction of that. What sits alongside it is the question, because cordial and sweetened lime juice are sugar syrup with flavour added, and most cocktail mixers bring a load of their own. Fresh lime over ice with soda and bruised mint costs you nothing at all.

Can I use lime juice instead of lemon juice?

On FODMAP grounds they are interchangeable: both were measured at 2 tablespoons and both came back with nothing in them. In cooking they are not. Lime is more bitter and more perfumed, and it belongs with coconut, chilli, coriander and fish sauce; lemon juice is cleaner and suits olive oil, butter and roast vegetables. Swap one into the other dish and it tastes wrong even though the arithmetic is identical.

Is Thai food low FODMAP?

Rarely as served, and lime is not the reason. Curry pastes start with garlic and shallot, and those go in at the beginning of a sauce where nothing can be picked out later. The fresh half of the cuisine does work: a lime and fish sauce dressing, rice noodles, herbs, chilli and grilled meat, or a curry built on a low FODMAP paste with canned coconut milk.

Does cooking lime juice change anything?

Not for FODMAPs, which are carbohydrates and do not leave with the steam. It changes the flavour a great deal: heat drives off the fragrance and leaves the sourness behind, which is why a lime-cooked sauce tastes flat and faintly bitter. If a marinade needs it, use half at the start and keep the rest for the finish, added once the pan is off the heat.
