Shallot

TLDRLast updated 3 September 2026

Half a shallot, 10 g, is rated red on 0.35 g of fructans. Shallots carry a reputation as the polite onion, the one a recipe reaches for when it wants sweetness without the punch, and that reputation describes flavour only. Milder on the tongue is not lighter in fructans, and half a shallot is already a small amount of food to be measuring.

Is shallot low FODMAP?

Weight for weight there is very little between a shallot and an onion: 0.35 g of fructans in 10 g against 0.4 g in the same 10 g of chopped onion. Both clear the 0.3 g point at which a portion is rated high, and both clear it at a weight most cooks would call a garnish. The bulbs being small works against you too, since a recipe calling for two shallots sounds gentler than one calling for an onion, while the fructans arrive at much the same total.

Shallot and IBS: what to know

Shallots turn up mostly in places where nobody is counting. Vinaigrettes and mignonettes use them raw and very finely minced, so the amount in a dressed salad is easy to underestimate, and fried shallot crisps, scattered over noodle and rice dishes across South-East Asia, are dried shallot, which puts more fructans under a spoonful than the fresh bulb would. Sold as eschalot or French shallot in Australia, the same bulb quietly underpins a great deal of restaurant sauce work, which is worth remembering when a dish arrives tasting sweet and savoury and you did not cook it yourself.

Gut-friendly ways to eat shallot

Shallots do two separate jobs, so they need two replacements. For the raw bite in a vinaigrette or a salsa, finely sliced chives or the green tops of a spring onion go in at the end and keep the sharpness. For the sweet cooked base under a pan sauce, leek greens softened slowly in garlic-infused oil come closest, with a splash of white wine vinegar for the acidity a shallot brings. Fried shallot crisps are worth skipping outright, since nobody serves them in a measured amount.

Frequently asked questions

Are shallots low FODMAP in small amounts?

There is no green serve in the data. The tested portion is already only half a shallot and it is rated red, so the guide does not describe anything below that. A quarter of a bulb minced into a dressing would carry less, but it has not been tested, and quarter-shallot precision is not how most people cook or how any restaurant plates a dish.

Are shallots better than onions for IBS?

Barely, and not by enough to build a diet on. At the same 10 g weight the two fructan figures are close and both portions are rated red. The belief that shallots are gentler comes from taste: they are sweeter and less sulphurous raw, which makes them easier to eat in quantity. That is the opposite of helpful when the limiting factor is fructans rather than flavour.

Are crispy fried shallots low FODMAP?

No, and they are a worse bet than the fresh bulb. Frying dries them out, so a spoonful of crisps stands for considerably more shallot than the same spoonful of raw chopped shallot would. They are also used as a garnish rather than measured. Since they are standard on Vietnamese, Thai and Indonesian dishes, it is worth asking for a plate without them.

What can I use instead of shallots in a French recipe?

For a beurre blanc, a mignonette or a pan sauce, soften leek greens or spring onion tops in garlic-infused oil, then add the wine and vinegar the recipe already asks for, because the acid is doing more of the work than the allium is. In a salad or a dressing, thinly sliced chives give you the raw bite without the fructan load.
