Rice Milk
Dairy · Plant Milk
Nothing at all registers on rice milk at the tested serve: three-quarters of a cup (200 ml) rates green with every FODMAP group reading zero. That makes it the plainest pour on the plant milk shelf. The catch has nothing to do with FODMAPs, and everything to do with what is in the carton, which is mostly starch, water and the sugars the starch was turned into.

Is rice milk low FODMAP?
Rice milk is made by cooking rice with enzymes that convert its starch into sugars, then straining out the solids and diluting what is left. The reason the column reads zero is the grain it starts from: rice brings no meaningful fructans or GOS to the tank, so there is nothing for the process to carry through. Set it beside oat milk, made along much the same lines, which reaches 0.16 g of fructans in a cup and rates amber. Two grains, one manufacturing method, and the difference sits entirely in the raw ingredient.
Rice Milk and IBS: what to know
One serve has been tested, three-quarters of a cup, and that is the point you can stand on rather than a licence to drink a litre. In practice this is the carton people arrive at after several others have gone badly, and it is a reasonable place to sit while you work out which group was actually causing trouble. Being thin and low in protein, it is a weak substitute if milk was doing nutritional work in your day, and it is worth raising with a dietitian if it has become the only milk in the house, particularly for a child.
Gut-friendly ways to eat rice milk
Rice milk is naturally sweet and very thin, which suits cereal, smoothies and baking better than tea, where it can vanish into the cup. It will not foam, so a flat white made with it is a disappointment. It thickens poorly too, so a sauce built on it wants a little more flour or cornflour than a dairy version would. When body is the thing you are missing, soy milk made from soy protein and lactose-free milk are both green at a cup, and a spoonful of canned coconut milk will enrich a sauce without dairy.
Frequently asked questions
Is rice milk the safest milk for IBS?
On the FODMAP side it is about as clean as the shelf gets, since the tested three-quarter cup records zero across all six groups, where every other plant milk registers something. Safest is not the same as best, though. Only one serve has been measured, and the drink is nutritionally thin, so it is a reliable pour rather than an equivalent to what it replaces.
How much rice milk can I drink in a day?
Three-quarters of a cup is what the testing covers, and past that point you are working from a guess rather than a measurement. Since nothing registers at the serve that was tested, there is no FODMAP group sitting there waiting to accumulate, which is not something you can say about most of this shelf. Spread over a day, a glass and a bowl of cereal is unremarkable.
Is rice milk better than almond or oat milk for IBS?
It is the emptiest of the three where FODMAPs are concerned. Almond milk carries 0.08 g of GOS in a cup and stays green; oat milk turns amber at a cup. Rice milk registers neither group. If you are already loading GOS from other foods that day, that difference is worth having; otherwise pick on taste and on how the milk behaves in what you are making.
Can I use rice milk in coffee?
You can, but expect it to taste watery and to separate in anything very hot or very acidic. It has no fat and little protein, which is exactly what coffee needs to hold a milk together, so it works better in a long black lengthened with a splash than in a latte. For milky coffee the soy protein or lactose-free options behave far more like dairy.
