Pecans

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Twenty pecans, 30 g, are rated green, and the profile behind that count is close to bare: 0.03 g of fructans, no GOS at all, and zeros for lactose, excess fructose, sorbitol and mannitol. Which means that when a pecan pie or a bowl of candied pecans goes badly for you, the nuts are the one part you can stop suspecting.

Is pecans low FODMAP?

GOS is the group that rations most of the nut shelf, and pecans record none of it whatever. The single reading is 0.03 g of fructans spread across all twenty halves, a third of the 0.1 g that would tip a portion into moderate. For scale, hazelnuts reach 0.1 g of fructans in a serve half that weight, which is why they get counted out in tens. Pecans give you twice the count for less. One portion has been measured, so 30 g is the weight the green rating actually covers.

Pecans and IBS: what to know

Pecans reach the table inside sugar more often than any other nut, and that is where the discomfort usually starts. Pie is a filling of golden or corn syrup set in a wheat pastry case. Praline is caramel. Candied pecans are glazed, sometimes with honey, which is rated red at its tested serve, and sticky buns add the flour and the dried fruit on top. In every one of those the nut contributes a trace of fructans and the surroundings contribute the rest, so take the dish apart before you cross pecans off your list.

Gut-friendly ways to eat pecans

Toasted and roughly chopped, pecans are the crunch on a salad of rocket, feta and roast pumpkin, and twenty halves will cover a bowl for two. They are sweeter and softer than most nuts, so they candy beautifully in a dry pan with a spoonful of maple syrup and salt, which gets you the dessert flavour without the pastry. In baking they spread thin: brownies cut into sixteen carry a couple of halves per square. Keep them in the freezer, because a nut this oily turns rancid on a warm shelf.

Frequently asked questions

How many pecans can I eat with IBS?

Twenty halves, about 30 g, is the measured serve and it is rated green, which for a nut is a roomy allowance rather than a counted few. Nothing beyond it has been tested, so a very large bowl sits outside the data instead of inside a known limit. Since no GOS registers at all, pecans are one of the easier nuts to keep in the cupboard during elimination.

Is pecan pie low FODMAP?

The filling is the problem, not the topping. A classic pie is corn or golden syrup, sugar, butter and eggs in a wheat pastry shell, so a slice brings fructans from the pastry and a large dose of sugars from the syrup. The pecans on top carry a trace of fructans and nothing else. A tart built on a gluten-free base with less syrup is the version worth trying.

Are pecans or walnuts better for IBS?

Walnuts are rated green at their tested serve as well, so pick on flavour rather than on FODMAPs. Walnuts are bitter and savoury, which suits pesto, salads and grain bowls; pecans are sweeter and buttery, which is why they keep turning up in desserts. The two tested serves weigh the same, so the difference lies in the count: twenty pecan halves against ten walnut ones.

Why do pecans feel heavy even though they are low FODMAP?

Fat. Pecans are roughly seventy per cent oil by weight, and a full twenty-nut serve is a real fat load arriving at once, which can speed the gut up or sit uncomfortably without any fermentation involved. If a large handful bothers you and a scatter over porridge does not, that pattern points at the fat rather than at the trace of fructans on this page.
