Idli (Plain, Cooked)

TLDRLast updated 3 October 2026

Plain cooked idli is low FODMAP at 100 g, described as three pieces in the Indian Monash entry. The larger references are moderate at 195 g, or six pieces, and high at 245 g, or 7½ pieces. Fructans explain the change.

Is idli (plain, cooked) low FODMAP?

The plain-idli panel shows all six groups green at the reference serving. Fructans alone become amber at 195 g and red at 245 g; GOS and the other four groups remain green. The checked panel does not specify an exact batter ratio or fermentation method.

Idli (Plain, Cooked) and IBS: what to know

For an IBS meal plan, the size of each idli matters as well as how many are on the plate. Mini idli, large restaurant pieces and homemade moulds need not match the app's count. Chutney and sambar are additional foods, so the plain-idli rating does not establish the result for the whole breakfast.

Gut-friendly ways to eat idli (plain, cooked)

Weigh the cooked idli when using a different mould or recipe, and portion accompaniments separately. Keep a note of the batter ingredients if comparing homemade batches. Plain dosa has its own app record and substantially different portion pattern, so a serving cannot be transferred simply because the dishes may be prepared from related batters.

Frequently asked questions

Are three idli always a low-FODMAP serving?

The green reference pairs three pieces with a cooked weight. Larger pieces or a different formulation may not match that serving description.

Does fermentation guarantee the same result for my batter?

No. This panel does not provide an exact recipe or fermentation protocol. A homemade variation is not automatically the tested plain-idli preparation.

Are chutney and sambar included?

They are not named in the checked plain-idli entry. Their ingredients and amounts should be considered separately from the idli themselves.
