Hemp Seeds

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Two tablespoons of hemp seeds, 30 g, are rated green, and the row behind that rating is completely blank: no GOS, no fructans, no lactose, no excess fructose, no sorbitol, no mannitol. Nothing was recorded at all. An empty row like that is unusual, and it makes hemp one of the plainest things you can add to a plate during elimination.

Is hemp seeds low FODMAP?

Zeros across the board mean nothing measurable was found in the tested two tablespoons. They do not mean the seed is inert. Roughly half a hemp seed by weight is oil and much of the rest is protein, and neither of those is a FODMAP or is captured by this rating. What the blank row buys you is arithmetic: hemp costs nothing against the day’s running total, so it can go on top of a meal that has already spent its margin elsewhere. Two tablespoons is what was measured, and beyond it you are guessing, though the profile gives you no obvious place for trouble to come from.

Hemp Seeds and IBS: what to know

Hemp seeds are soft. There is no shell worth mentioning and no snap to them, and they collapse into whatever they are stirred through, which is a genuine advantage if roughage rather than fermentable sugar is what usually catches you out. The other side of that softness is fat, since two tablespoons is an oily addition and a large amount of fat at once can hurry things along or sit heavily on its own account. They are sold as hemp hearts, hulled hemp and hemp seed hearts, all the same thing. Hemp milk is not the same thing: it is strained, and its entry carries its own tested serve.

Gut-friendly ways to eat hemp seeds

Hemp goes in rather than on. A spoonful stirred through porridge, yoghurt or a smoothie disappears completely, while the same spoonful over a salad looks like the plate has been dusted with sand. Use them where the texture is meant to vanish: blended into a dressing, folded through warm quinoa, whisked into pancake batter, pressed into the outside of a fish fillet. They scorch and turn bitter in a hot dry pan much faster than a nut does, so add them after the heat rather than before.

Frequently asked questions

How many hemp seeds can I eat in a day?

Two tablespoons is the measured amount and everything in it reads zero, which leaves you more room than most foods in this section of the guide. Bigger servings have not been tested, so they are unmeasured rather than known to be a problem. The practical limit is usually the oil content: a heaped half cup on a bowl of porridge is a lot of fat before breakfast.

Are hemp hearts and hemp seeds the same thing?

Yes, in the bag you actually buy. Hemp hearts are the kernels with the tough outer husk removed, which is what the food trade sells, and they are what this entry describes. Whole unhulled hemp seed is a different eating experience altogether, hard and very fibrous, and it is mostly sold as birdseed rather than for people. If the packet says hulled, hearts, or shelled, it is the soft version.

Do hemp seeds contain THC?

Food hemp comes from varieties bred for seed and fibre, the husk is removed before the kernels are packed, and eating them has no intoxicating effect whatsoever. It also has no bearing on digestion, which is what this page is about: the seed reads zero across all six FODMAP groups either way. If a supplier’s label worries you, look for one that publishes testing rather than avoiding the food.

Are hemp seeds better than chia or flax for IBS?

They do different jobs, and all three come in green at their own tested serves. Chia needs soaking and sets into a gel, flaxseed needs grinding before it does much of anything, and hemp needs neither: you open the bag and use it. If you want something to stir in tonight with no preparation and no waiting, hemp is the straightforward one of the three.
