Hemp Milk

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Hemp milk is pressed from a seed rather than a nut, a bean or a grain, which is the reason it has a place on the shelf at all. One cup, 250 ml, is rated green, carrying 0.05 g of GOS with nothing from the other five groups. When allergies have closed off most of the aisle, this is often what is left standing.

Is hemp milk low FODMAP?

GOS is the only group with a figure attached, and at 0.05 g per cup it sits at half the 0.1 g level where a serve begins to count as moderate. Nobody produces the enzyme needed to break GOS down, so all of it arrives intact at the large bowel and the bacteria there ferment it; the only variable is how much makes the trip. Hemp seeds are pressed and strained much as nuts are, and the bulk of the seed solids never reach the carton, which is what keeps a full cup so far under the line.

Hemp Milk and IBS: what to know

Hemp milk earns its place by what it leaves out. It shares no allergen with almonds, cashews, soybeans or wheat, so it stays available when a food allergy sits on top of IBS and the list of options is already thin. The GOS is small rather than absent, so it joins whatever legumes, bread and nuts contributed earlier, and three glasses is three times the amount in one. Protein and fat content vary quite a bit between brands, which matters more here than it does for the drinks that are mostly water and starch.

Gut-friendly ways to eat hemp milk

Expect a grassy, faintly nutty flavour that carries into whatever you use it for. That suits porridge, spiced smoothies and baking better than a cup of tea, where the taste turns up uninvited. It separates on standing, so shake it hard, and it will not hold a foam for a cappuccino. If the flavour is the sticking point, macadamia milk is the mildest of the alternatives and rice milk the sweetest, each tested at a serve of its own. Whole hemp seeds are a separate entry if you want the seed rather than the drink.

Frequently asked questions

Is hemp milk safe if I have a nut allergy?

Hemp is a seed, not a tree nut, so it is one of the few creamy plant milks open to you, though shared production lines mean the allergen statement on the carton is still the thing to read. On the IBS side, the tested cup rates green on 0.05 g of GOS, so it does not ask you to trade an allergy problem for a portion problem.

How much hemp milk can I drink in a day?

One cup is the measured serve and it comes in green. GOS scales with volume, so a litre spread over a day is roughly four times the amount in that cup, and it lands on top of any beans, bread or nuts you ate. If GOS is a group you know you react to, the total across the day is the number to watch rather than the glass.

Does hemp milk contain THC?

No. Food hemp is grown from varieties bred for seed and fibre, and the drink is made by blending and straining those seeds. It has no intoxicating effect and the question has no bearing on the FODMAP rating, which rests entirely on the 0.05 g of GOS in a cup. Some countries label it hemp seed drink for exactly this reason.

Is hemp milk better than soy milk for IBS?

They are close on the FODMAP side. Soy milk made from soy protein carries the same 0.05 g of GOS in a cup and is also rated green, so the decision usually comes down to something else. Soy wins on protein and on foaming for coffee; hemp wins if soy is an allergen or if you simply prefer the taste.
