Flax Seeds (Linseeds)
Nuts & Seeds · Seeds
One tablespoon of flax seeds, 13 g, is rated green, on 0.05 g of GOS and 0.02 g of fructans. The more useful fact is that a whole linseed is armoured. It travels through you largely unopened, so the spoonful that actually does something is a ground one. Buy the seed whole, grind it yourself, and keep the meal cold.

Breakdown for 1 tablespoon
Is flax seeds (linseeds) low FODMAP?
GOS is the only group with any weight behind it, at 0.05 g in a tablespoon, with fructans at 0.02 g and the other four blank. One serve has been tested, and both readings are small in it. What grinding changes is not the rating but the access: an intact linseed keeps its contents to itself, while a ground one hands them over, to you and to the bacteria further down. The mucilage and fibre that people buy flaxseed for are not FODMAPs, are not what this rating measures, and sit outside these figures entirely.
Flax Seeds (Linseeds) and IBS: what to know
Ground flaxseed goes stale fast. The oil in it is fragile, and a bag of pre-milled meal left in a cupboard turns bitter and faintly fishy well before the date on the packet, which is a taste problem rather than a gut one but puts plenty of people off the seed for good. Grind a few days’ worth at a time. Flaxseed oil is a different product again, carrying none of the seed’s fibre and no tested serve here, so nothing on this page describes it. And whole seeds baked into a multigrain loaf mostly arrive unopened, so if seeded bread is hard work, look at the wheat flour first.
Gut-friendly ways to eat flax seeds (linseeds)
A tablespoon of meal stirs into porridge, yoghurt or a smoothie without announcing itself, which is most of its appeal. Fresh flaxseed tastes warm and nutty, so it belongs with oats or in baking rather than scattered over a salad. It thickens water into something gluey, which is the basis of the flax egg that vegan baking runs on. A coffee grinder or spice mill does the job in ten seconds and a blender will not, and whole seed costs a fraction of what golden linseed meal does for a product that lasts longer.
Frequently asked questions
Should I eat flax seeds whole or ground?
Ground, if you want the seed to do anything. The hull is tough enough that whole linseed generally passes through undamaged, which is why you can see it again afterwards. Chewing helps a little and grinding settles it. The tablespoon on this page is the tested amount either way, so grinding is about getting at the seed rather than about changing the rating.
How much flaxseed can I have on a low FODMAP diet?
One tablespoon, about 13 g, is the only measured amount and it comes in green. Two or three spoonfuls a day is a habit plenty of people have, but it is beyond what has been tested, and GOS scales with the quantity. If you are stacking flaxseed on top of beans, bread and nuts, the running total for the day matters more than the spoon.
Is golden linseed different from brown flaxseed?
They are two varieties of the same plant. Golden linseed is milder and lighter in colour, brown is earthier, and both grind to the same kind of meal. No separate serve has been tested for the golden type, so the tablespoon here is what you have to work with for either. Choose on taste and on price, since golden usually costs more for no practical gain.
Is flaxseed good for IBS constipation?
This page can only tell you that a tablespoon is low in FODMAPs; it says nothing about what the fibre will do for you. Added fibre helps some people with IBS and makes others distinctly worse, and which camp you fall into depends on your symptoms rather than on the seed. It is a fair question to put to a dietitian. Whatever you try, drink water alongside it.
