Coffee (instant)

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Instant coffee is rated green at the tested cup, 180 ml made from a teaspoon of granules, and all six FODMAP groups read zero. None of that covers the sachets. A 3-in-1 stick or a flavoured cappuccino mix is coffee plus milk powder plus sweetener, and the powder is the part with a FODMAP question attached to it.

Is coffee (instant) low FODMAP?

Instant is not a different bean. It is brewed coffee with the water taken out: the factory brews at scale, dries the extract into granules or freeze-dries it into crystals, and your kettle puts the water back. Whatever stayed behind in the grounds at that first step never reaches the jar, which is why the panel comes back blank across every group. Decaffeinated granules are made the same way, and stripping caffeine out is a process that removes something rather than adding a carbohydrate.

Coffee (instant) and IBS: what to know

This is the mug coffee. It gets made at a desk, made at home, made a fourth time because the kettle is right there, and that habit is worth naming, because the rating on this page covers fermentable carbohydrate and says nothing at all about caffeine. A teaspoon of granules is a lighter cup than a double shot only until you have had three of them. Anyone who moved to instant in order to cut down is best served counting mugs rather than assuming the jar did the work. Espresso and filter have their own entry at black coffee.

Gut-friendly ways to eat coffee (instant)

Buy the plain jar and add your own things to it. A 3-in-1 stick brings milk powder and sugar in proportions you did not choose, while cappuccino, mocha and caramel sachets stack a flavour base on top, so the dairy arrives inside the drink instead of beside it. Plain granules leave the decision with you: lactose-free milk is rated green at a full cup, almond milk holds a green entry at its tested cup, and white sugar is rated green at a tablespoon. Powdered whiteners and creamers are a separate product again and repay reading before they go in.

Frequently asked questions

Are 3-in-1 coffee sachets low FODMAP?

The figure on this page is for granules and hot water, and a 3-in-1 is neither. Those sticks are built on milk powder, which carries lactose in a quantity the sachet does not print, plus sugar and often a vegetable fat and a stabiliser. Nothing in that mix has a tested serve here. Making the same drink from plain granules and a milk you have chosen is the version this rating describes.

Does instant coffee have less caffeine than espresso?

A cup made from one teaspoon of granules is generally lighter in caffeine than a shot of espresso, though brands and how heaped the spoon is both move it. This guide does not measure caffeine, so that comparison sits outside the rating rather than inside it. If your morning is three instant coffees rather than one espresso, the arithmetic may not favour the switch as much as it seems to.

Is decaf instant coffee low FODMAP?

Only the caffeinated granules have a tested serve in this guide, so decaf is untested rather than rated. What can be said is that decaffeination takes caffeine out of the bean before the coffee is brewed and dried, which is a subtraction rather than an addition. Watch decaf sachets for the same reason as any other sachet: it is the milk powder and sweetener that change the picture.

Why does instant coffee upset my stomach if it is rated green?

A green rating means the cup is not supplying fermentable carbohydrate for gut bacteria to work on. It does not certify that the drink agrees with you, and there are two obvious suspects it never covered: how much milk went in, and how much caffeine you have had by mid-morning. Changing one of them at a time for a week tells you far more than dropping coffee altogether.
