Coconut Cream

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

A third of a cup of coconut cream, 80 ml, is rated green and holds 0.06 g of sorbitol. No recipe you own asks for a third of a cup. A standard tin runs to five of those measures, so halving one between two people still lands well past the amount the green rating covers.

Is coconut cream low FODMAP?

Sorbitol is the one group with anything in it here: 0.06 g in the tested 80 ml, against the 0.2 g mark where a polyol serve begins to count as moderate. Lactose reads zero, which surprises people who buy the tin as a dairy substitute and go looking for the catch. Water is what separates cream from the tin of coconut milk. Cream is the thicker pressing, so each spoonful carries more of what the flesh contained, sorbitol included, and the serve that stays green shrinks accordingly.

Coconut Cream and IBS: what to know

Desserts get away from people more often than curries do. Coconut cream sets a panna cotta, whips into a topping and churns into dairy-free ice cream, and in each of those it is most of the dish rather than a background note. A slice of coconut tart can carry several measures without looking like a large portion. Polyols accumulate across a day as well, so the tart after a curry made from the same tin is one running total rather than two separate treats.

Gut-friendly ways to eat coconut cream

Treat it as a flavour rather than as the liquid in the pan. Measure out the green amount and make the rest of the volume up with low FODMAP chicken stock or water, and you get a rich sauce at the serve that was actually tested. A teaspoon of cornflour whisked in gives body that the fat alone would not, so less goes further. When volume is the point, coconut milk from a carton is the thin pour, and thickened cream whips properly if dairy is not the reason you are here.

Frequently asked questions

How much coconut cream can I use in a curry?

The tested 80 ml per person is green, and stretched with stock it makes a genuinely creamy sauce for one. Poured straight from the tin for two, you are each eating roughly two and a half times that. Measuring into the pan rather than tipping is the entire difference between the two outcomes.

What is the difference between coconut cream and coconut milk?

Thickness, and how much water was added back after the flesh was pressed. Cream is the concentrated fraction, the tin of coconut milk is thinner, and the carton is thinner again and meant for drinking. All three are separate entries with separate tested serves, so swapping one for another in a recipe changes the portion you have eaten.

Is coconut cream OK if I am lactose intolerant?

There is no lactose in it, since nothing about it comes from an animal. That does not make it unlimited, because sorbitol replaces lactose as the thing setting the portion. Lactose is also the group most people overestimate in cream generally, since thickened dairy cream is largely fat and carries far less of it than milk does.

Can I whip coconut cream for a dessert?

Yes, if you chill the tin overnight and use the solid part that rises to the top. That solid part is the most concentrated coconut in the tin, and whipping triples its volume, so a generous cloud on a bowl of berries is easily more than one green measure. Serve it in spoonfuls rather than dollops.
