Chickpeas / Garbanzo Beans (Whole, Dried, Sprouted)

TLDRLast updated 27 September 2026

Sprouted chickpeas, also called sprouted garbanzo beans, are low FODMAP at 40 g, approximately ¼ cup. Monash lists 47 g as moderate and 143 g as high. These amounts describe whole dried chickpeas after sprouting, not a dry weight to measure before germination.

Is chickpeas / garbanzo beans (whole, dried, sprouted) low FODMAP?

GOS becomes amber at 47 g while fructans remain green; at the 143 g cup serving, both GOS and fructans are red. Sprouting therefore does not make an unrestricted chickpea serving low FODMAP. Chickpeas boiled from dried have a separate preparation-specific guide.

Chickpeas / Garbanzo Beans (Whole, Dried, Sprouted) and IBS: what to know

The difference between the green and amber sprouted-chickpea portions is small enough that a heaped scoop can obscure it. When assessing your own response, record the sprouted amount and the accompanying ingredients rather than simply writing 'chickpeas'. A mixed sprout pack can also contain legumes with different ratings.

Gut-friendly ways to eat chickpeas / garbanzo beans (whole, dried, sprouted)

Measure the sprouted chickpeas separately from dressing or other salad ingredients. Follow the product's cooking and storage instructions. Health Canada identifies raw sprouts as a food-poisoning risk for pregnant people, young children, older adults and people with weakened immunity, and recommends thoroughly cooked sprouts for these groups. This FODMAP entry does not establish a cooked-weight conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is one cup of sprouted chickpeas low FODMAP?

The checked cup serving is 143 g and high in both GOS and fructans. The listed green reference is the much smaller 40 g, roughly ¼-cup portion.

Can I apply these portions to canned chickpeas?

Use the canned entry for canned chickpeas. Sprouted garbanzo beans are a different preparation and their 40 g green reference should not replace another preparation's tested portions.

Does a green rating mean sprouts can be eaten raw?

The colour describes FODMAPs, not microbiological safety. Sprouted chickpeas still need appropriate handling and preparation; the separate food-safety guidance matters even when the portion is green.
