Cherries
Fruits · Stone Fruits
Three cherries, about 30 g, is the green serve. Ten cherries, about 90 g, is rated red. That is the entire range, and it is why cherries are awkward rather than banned: the low FODMAP portion is smaller than the handful anyone takes from a bowl, and the red portion is still less than a snack.

Breakdown for 3 cherries
Is cherries low FODMAP?
Cherries carry excess fructose and sorbitol at once, in small amounts to begin with. Three cherries hold 0.08 g of excess fructose and 0.12 g of sorbitol, the sorbitol sitting under the 0.2 g point where a polyol starts to count, and that serve is rated green. Seven cherries later the picture has changed: excess fructose reaches 0.24 g, past the 0.15 g high threshold, and sorbitol reaches 0.36 g. Nothing else appears at either serve, with fructans, GOS and lactose all at zero, so this fruit is a fructose and polyol story only.
Cherries and IBS: what to know
Cherries are eaten by the handful, straight from the bowl, usually while talking to someone, and that is the honest obstacle: nobody counts to three and stops. If you want them, put your portion on a plate and leave the bowl in the kitchen. Sorbitol also accumulates across a day alongside the other polyols, so three cherries after a lunch that already included avocado is a different proposition from three cherries on their own. Cherry juice concentrate and dried cherries both pack far more fruit into a mouthful than the fresh serve allows.
Gut-friendly ways to eat cherries
Use cherries as a garnish and not as the snack itself: three halved over yoghurt, three chopped through porridge, three in a lunchbox next to something more substantial. Where you want a bowl of small round fruit to keep picking at, grapes are rated green at 15 grapes, 75 g, and strawberries at 10 medium berries, 140 g. Both give you a serve you can actually finish. Glacé cherries, cherry jam and cherry sorbet are sweets that happen to taste of fruit, so judge them on their sugar and their scoop size instead.
Frequently asked questions
How many cherries can I eat with IBS?
Three is the green serve, about 30 g, and ten is rated red at about 90 g. Our data holds no tested point in between, so five or six cherries is genuinely unmapped territory rather than a known middle ground. If you are still in a strict phase, three is the number to work with, weighed once so your eye learns it.
Why do cherries cause bloating or urgency?
Sorbitol is usually behind it. It is a polyol the small intestine absorbs poorly, so it carries water with it into the large bowel and then ferments there, which is why the reaction often arrives as cramping or a sudden rush rather than gas alone. Cherries add excess fructose on top, reaching 0.24 g at the ten-cherry serve.
Are dried or frozen cherries low FODMAP?
Freezing leaves FODMAP content alone, so frozen cherries follow the fresh figures and can be counted the same way. Drying is different, because water leaves and sugars concentrate, so a small handful of dried cherries represents far more than the three-cherry serve. Our figures cover fresh cherries, and the fresh count is the safer thing to portion by.
Should I use cherries to test my sorbitol tolerance?
They are a poor choice, because two groups move at the same time and a reaction cannot tell you which one caused it. Avocado registers sorbitol alone in our data, with no fructose, fructans or GOS, which makes it a cleaner food for a polyol challenge. Save cherries for after you know where you stand.
