Is black beans (dried, boiled, drained) low FODMAP?

GOS changes to amber at the 48 g serving. At 160 g both GOS and fructans are red. This preparation has its own test entry: a can of black beans, a refried bean product and beans served in their cooking liquid are not equivalent to plain boiled, drained black beans.

Black Beans (Dried, Boiled, Drained) and IBS: what to know

In a burrito bowl, the amount of black beans can be easy to underestimate beneath rice, salsa and other toppings. Measure the beans separately if you are following a low FODMAP phase or comparing meals in a symptom diary. A green portion is a useful reference, but it cannot predict your response to the whole bowl.

Gut-friendly ways to eat black beans (dried, boiled, drained)

Prepare dried black beans following the packet instructions, drain them, then weigh your cooked portion. Scatter the measured beans through a rice bowl or divide them between tacos. For a bean dip, measure the beans before blending and keep track of how much dip the recipe yields; adding water changes the dip's weight without removing the beans.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 42 g allowance a dry weight?

No. It is the weight after the dried black beans have been boiled and drained. This entry does not supply a conversion from dry weight to cooked yield.

Can I eat a cup of boiled black beans on a low FODMAP diet?

The tested cup-sized serving, 160 g, is high in GOS and fructans. The green reference portion is much smaller, at 42 g.

Can I replace these with another boiled bean?

Check the replacement's own serving guide. For example, boiled butter beans have a different green portion; the same spoonful does not establish the same FODMAP rating.
