Persimmon

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

A quarter of a persimmon, about 55 g, is rated green, and a whole one, 150 g, is rated red. Three groups get it there: excess fructose, fructans and GOS, and GOS is the one that normally belongs to beans and lentils rather than to fruit. The practical catch is the shape of the thing, because a persimmon is eaten like an apple and a quarter is not how anybody serves it.

Fructose reads high on its own limits here, even though 0.25 persimmons is rated low overall. The rating comes from testing the serving as a whole. If that group is one you react to, treat this portion with more caution than the rating alone suggests.

Is persimmon low FODMAP?

None of the three groups is large by itself, and that is rather the point. At a quarter, excess fructose sits at 0.1 g with fructans and GOS at 0.05 g each, and the serve is rated green. At a whole fruit the fructose reaches 0.27 g, past the 0.15 g high line, while fructans and GOS both climb to 0.14 g, over their 0.1 g moderate marks. Fructans and GOS are both oligosaccharides, fermented by gut bacteria because no human enzyme splits them. Pomegranate is one of the few other fruits carrying GOS at all, at 0.25 g in a 150 g serve of seeds.

Persimmon and IBS: what to know

Persimmons come in two kinds and this guide covers them as one. The squat, firm sort is sliced and eaten crisp; the pointed sort is mouth-puckering until it has gone almost jelly-soft, and it is only worth eating when fully ripe. The figures do not split by variety, so portion by weight rather than by whichever one is on the counter. The real difficulty is that a quarter is an awkward place to stop: the cut surface browns within hours, so the rest of the fruit becomes a decision for the same day, with the other three quarters sitting there as the red serve.

Gut-friendly ways to eat persimmon

Slice the quarter thin and let it stretch: fanned over yoghurt, cut through a salad with fennel and something salty, or laid on toast with ricotta. Cut the whole fruit and share it four ways, which is both the version the data supports and the version that leaves nothing browning in the fridge. When you want a whole piece of fruit to eat by yourself, one orange is green at 130 g and two kiwifruit hold their green rating at 150 g. Dried persimmon has no entry here.

Frequently asked questions

How much persimmon can I eat with IBS?

A quarter of a fruit, about 55 g, is the green serve, and a whole persimmon, 150 g, is rated red. Half has never been measured, so it sits between a known-safe portion and a known-high one with nothing to say which side it falls on. Fruit size varies as well, so a large persimmon quartered gives you four pieces that each outweigh the tested serve.

Are Fuyu and Hachiya persimmons different for FODMAPs?

This guide holds one set of figures for persimmon and does not separate the varieties, so the quarter-fruit serve applies to both. What differs between them is astringency and ripeness: the firm, flat-bottomed kind is eaten crisp, while the pointed kind has to be soft before it is edible at all. Ripeness is not something these figures track, so weigh the portion rather than adjusting for type in your head.

Why does persimmon contain GOS when it is a fruit?

GOS is a family of short carbohydrate chains most people meet in chickpeas, lentils and beans, but it is not exclusive to legumes and appears in small amounts across some fruit and vegetables. In persimmon it registers at both tested serves, small at a quarter and roughly three times that at a whole fruit, so it never dominates but it does add to the total. If legumes are a known trigger for you, that overlap is worth knowing before you eat one whole.

Are dried persimmons low FODMAP?

There is no tested serve for dried persimmon here, and nothing on this page transfers to it. Drying removes water and leaves all three groups packed into a much smaller piece, so one dried slice can stand for a good deal more than the green quarter. Persimmon also finds its way into puddings and jams where several fruit go into a single dish. Where there is no measurement, assume a smaller portion rather than the same one.
