Kombu / Kelp Seaweed (Dried)

TLDRLast updated 27 September 2026

The Monash entry named 'Seaweed, Kombu / Kelp, dried' shows 30 g as high FODMAP because of mannitol. Its household serving label says one and a half ribbons, soaked. Because the title and serving wording describe different stages, this guide does not interpret 30 g as a confirmed dry weight.

Is kombu / kelp seaweed (dried) low FODMAP?

Only a red portion was shown for this entry. Fructose, lactose, sorbitol, GOS and fructans are green in that panel, but that does not cancel the high mannitol result. There is no verified green amount here, so reducing a ribbon by an arbitrary fraction would not establish one.

Kombu / Kelp Seaweed (Dried) and IBS: what to know

The separately tested unwiped, soaked and drained Japanese kombu has its own preparation description and ratings. Do not transfer those figures to every dried kelp product. FSANZ identifies iodine as another consideration for seaweed, with some brown seaweeds having very high levels; a FODMAP serving does not measure iodine.

Gut-friendly ways to eat kombu / kelp seaweed (dried)

Check the exact product and preparation before using a kombu reference. The observed soaked-ribbon label should remain attached to this result rather than being silently converted to dry grams. This inspection did not verify kombu broth or dashi after the ribbon is removed. Compare nori for a distinct sheet-format seaweed entry.

Frequently asked questions

Is the listed 30 g definitely dry kombu?

No. The entry title says dried, but the serving label explicitly says soaked. The check cannot resolve that into a dry-weight claim.

Can I infer a low-FODMAP amount from the red portion?

No green portion was displayed in this entry. A smaller amount may differ, but this source check does not establish its rating.

Does removing kombu make dashi low FODMAP?

The inspected panel does not test the resulting liquid. Its rating cannot be used to certify a broth after the seaweed has been removed.
