Guava (ripe)

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

The serve most people take has never been tested. A guava gets eaten whole, and the measurements here cover half a fruit, 55 g, which is rated green, and one and a half fruits, 150 g, which is rated red. One whole guava falls in the gap between them, so this page is as much about that gap as about the two figures.

Is guava (ripe) low FODMAP?

At the green half, fructans are the only thing recorded, at 0.05 g, with the other five groups reading zero. Take the serve to 150 g and excess fructose appears at 0.22 g, past 0.15 g and high enough to set the rating by itself. Fructans climb to 0.14 g behind it, and GOS goes from nothing at all to 0.3 g, the top of its moderate band. GOS is the oligosaccharide of beans and lentils, and three tenths of a gram of it puts guava in company few fruits keep. Persimmon is one of the others, carrying 0.14 g at a whole fruit.

Guava (ripe) and IBS: what to know

The gap between the two serves is not a thing to average. A whole guava is nearer the red measurement than the green one by weight, and the group climbing fastest between them starts from zero, so there is no small baseline of GOS to reason from. If beans and lentils are already a known trigger, that is the part of this page worth respecting. Guava is also a fruit most people meet in another form: nectar and bottled drinks, sweetened paste sold in blocks, pink pulp stirred through desserts and juices. None of those has been tested here, and each of them packs in more fruit than a half.

Gut-friendly ways to eat guava (ripe)

Half a fruit is a share rather than a snack, so treat it that way: cut lengthways, eaten off the skin with salt and chilli on the cut face, or sliced thin so it spreads through a fruit salad instead of vanishing in three bites. Buy them fragrant, since this entry covers ripe fruit and a hard green guava is a different thing on the plate. When you want a full bowl rather than a measured half, dragon fruit is rated green at half a fruit, 120 g, and papaya holds a green entry at a cup of cubes.

Frequently asked questions

How much guava can I eat with IBS?

Half a fruit, 55 g, is the green serve. The next measurement up is one and a half fruits at 150 g and it is rated red, so anything in between is genuinely unknown rather than a safe middle. Guavas also vary a good deal in size, and half a large one can outweigh the 55 g the tested serve describes, which makes the scales more useful than the halving.

Is one whole guava low FODMAP?

It has not been measured, so nobody can tell you. What the two tested points show is that the groups do not climb gently across that range: GOS goes from zero to 0.3 g and excess fructose from zero to 0.22 g between them. A whole fruit sits closer by weight to the red serve than to the green one, which is the more cautious way to read it while it stays untested.

Are guava seeds a problem for IBS?

The seeds are insoluble fibre rather than a FODMAP, and swallowing them is ordinary. Texture is the real question here, because they are hard and gritty and some people with sensitive guts find that uncomfortable while the fruit itself gives them no trouble. Scooping the flesh away from the seedy centre, or pushing the pulp through a sieve, keeps the portion the same and loses the crunch.

Is guava juice or guava paste low FODMAP?

Neither is covered by these figures, and both concentrate the fruit. Guava paste is boiled with sugar until it sets in a block, so a slice off it stands for far more than half a fruit, and nectar is purée let down with water and sweetened. Given how quickly fructose and GOS rise between the two serves that were measured, a smaller portion is the sensible assumption for anything untested.
