Durian

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

Durian has a green serve, which tends to surprise people who read the smell as a warning label. Two segments, 80 g, sit comfortably inside the line. Four, 160 g, turn on four FODMAP groups at once and the rating goes red, excess fructose leading at 0.25 g from a standing start. The distance between the two is one more helping.

Is durian low FODMAP?

At 80 g there is very little to describe: 0.04 g of fructans and 0.05 g of sorbitol, each under the amount at which its group begins to count, with excess fructose, GOS and lactose absent altogether. At 160 g the picture changes on four fronts at once. Excess fructose appears at 0.25 g, well over the 0.15 g that makes a portion high, and that figure alone earns the red rating. GOS reaches 0.2 g and lands in the moderate range, while fructans double to 0.08 g and sorbitol to 0.1 g without either crossing its own line. Four groups moving together is unusual in a fruit, though the verdict still rests on fructose.

Durian and IBS: what to know

Nobody buys durian by the segment. It arrives whole, gets opened over a table and is picked at standing up by several people, which is exactly the setting in which two segments becomes four without a decision. Pod size varies as well, so two from a large fruit can outweigh the 80 g the green serve describes, and a count is a weaker guide than a scale. The other thing to know is that durian is far richer than most fruit, closer to an avocado than to a melon in how heavy it sits. Fullness and reflux after a large share may have nothing to do with the FODMAP groups at all.

Gut-friendly ways to eat durian

Frozen pods are the practical answer, because they thaw one at a time and two segments becomes a portion you can stop at rather than a share of something already open. Custard-thick and eaten cold with a spoon, it goes further than it does warm. Where the count disappears is in dessert form, since durian pancakes, mochi, cake and ice cream each hide an unmeasured quantity of pulp inside something else. If what you want is a large bowl of tropical fruit rather than a measured portion of a strong one, pineapple is rated green at a full cup of 140 g and papaya at the same weight of cubes.

Frequently asked questions

How much durian can I eat with IBS?

Two segments, about 80 g, is the green serve, and four segments at 160 g is rated red. Three has not been measured and sits between a known safe portion and a known high one. Because pods differ so much in size, two segments off a big fruit can already weigh more than the tested serve, which makes weighing worth doing once.

Why does durian upset my stomach?

There is more than one candidate at a large serve. Four FODMAP groups are present at once, with excess fructose crossing into the high band at 0.25 g and GOS sitting in the moderate range behind it. Durian is also unusually rich, and heavy fatty food can produce fullness and reflux with no FODMAP involvement. If trouble follows a big share rather than a couple of segments, portion is the first thing to change.

Is frozen durian the same as fresh?

For FODMAPs, yes, and for portioning it is easier. Freezing does not alter the figures, and frozen pods come out of the bag one at a time instead of a whole fruit being opened at once, which is the usual reason people overshoot. Dried durian chips are a separate question with no tested serve here, since drying packs a lot of fruit into something eaten by the handful.

Can I eat durian during a low FODMAP elimination phase?

Yes, at two segments. That serve holds 0.04 g of fructans and 0.05 g of sorbitol, both below the point where their groups start to count, so it is a green portion like any other. Keeping to it is the hard part rather than the rating, because durian is rarely eaten alone or slowly and a shared fruit comes with no serving size printed on it.
