Coconut Milk (carton/beverage)
Dairy · Plant Milk
Two things are sold as coconut milk and only one of them is a drink. The carton is thinned for pouring, and a whole cup of it, 250 ml, is rated green on 0.05 g of sorbitol. The tin is a cooking ingredient with a smaller tested serve and its own entry, so a glass and a curry are not one question.

Is coconut milk (carton/beverage) low FODMAP?
Sorbitol is the sole group recorded, at 0.05 g per cup, a quarter of the 0.2 g point where a polyol portion becomes moderate. That reading is a fact about manufacturing rather than about coconut. A beverage carton is typically a small percentage of coconut extract in water, with gums for body, a little salt and often added calcium making up the difference. You are pouring something that began as coconut flesh and then had most of the coconut taken back out of it.
Coconut Milk (carton/beverage) and IBS: what to know
The mistake this page exists to prevent happens in the supermarket, not the gut. Tins and cartons carry nearly identical words on the front, sit in different aisles, and get swapped constantly, which is how a curry turns out watery and a bowl of cereal turns out oddly rich. Sweetened, barista and flavoured versions are the other variable, since the additions differ by brand and the rating describes plain unsweetened milk. Volume is the last lever: the sorbitol climbs in step with every extra cup you pour, so a litre through the day is four times a glass.
Gut-friendly ways to eat coconut milk (carton/beverage)
Pour it, do not cook with it. It suits cereal, smoothies and iced coffee, and it will not build a sauce, because too little fat is left in it to do that work. When a recipe wants coconut richness, the tin measured out or coconut cream stretched with water will get you there and the carton will not. In a very hot flat white it tends to split, so pour it into coffee that has stood for a moment. Macadamia milk is the creamier plant pour, and lactose-free milk is closest to dairy in body.
Frequently asked questions
Can I drink coconut milk every day with IBS?
A cup a day sits on the tested green serve, and nothing about the drink changes as you keep pouring, so two or three cups simply doubles or triples the sorbitol. Watch it stacking with other polyol sources rather than watching the carton alone. Stone fruit, sugar-free gum and a coconut dessert on the same day all feed the same total.
Is carton coconut milk the same as the tinned kind?
No. The carton is a diluted drink and the tin is a concentrated cooking ingredient, and the guide lists canned coconut milk separately with a different tested amount. Reading one rating across to the other misleads you in both directions, which is why the aisle you took it from matters as much as the label.
Is coconut milk a good dairy substitute for IBS?
For lactose, yes, since none is recorded in it. Nutritionally it is thin, with very little protein compared with cow’s milk, so it replaces the pour without replacing what the pour was doing. Soy milk made from soy protein is the closer match if protein matters, and it is rated green at the same cup size.
Why does coconut milk still make me bloated?
Sorbitol is one candidate and probably not the main one at this concentration. Added fibres are worth checking first, because inulin and chicory root fibre appear in some thickened cartons and are concentrated fructans. After that, consider quantity, and consider the gums used to keep the drink in suspension, which bother some people regardless of FODMAP content.
