Beef (all cuts)
Meat, Fish & Eggs · Meat
A 150 g steak is one of the least complicated things you can put on a low FODMAP plate: no fructans, no GOS, nothing in the other four groups either. Mince is the same meat and a completely different story, because mince almost never arrives on its own. Bolognese, chilli and burgers are built on onion, and that is what the reaction is usually about.

Breakdown for 150 g
Is beef (all cuts) low FODMAP?
Beef has no fermentable carbohydrate to give, so cut, grade and cooking method make no difference to the rating: brisket, mince and fillet all land on the same green. What changes is the recipe wrapped around it. One tablespoon of chopped onion, 10 g, already carries 0.4 g of fructans and is rated red, and a pot of bolognese starts with a whole onion rather than a spoonful. The beef in that pot has contributed nothing at all, while the base has contributed several red serves before the sauce even simmers.
Beef (all cuts) and IBS: what to know
Two things about beef are worth knowing beyond the FODMAP figures. Fat is the first. A rib-eye, a fatty mince or a fried burger delivers a lot of fat in one sitting, and a rich meal can provoke IBS symptoms in its own right, entirely separately from anything fermentable. Being honest about that matters, because a green rating does not promise you will feel fine. The second is what gets mixed in: plain pork and beef sausages are rated amber here, since the mince is bulked with rusk and seasoned with allium before you buy it.
Gut-friendly ways to eat beef (all cuts)
Rebuild the base and the classics come back. Brown the mince properly, since that colour is doing most of the work you had been crediting to the onion, then add garlic-infused oil, canned tomatoes, bay, oregano and a splash of red wine. A low FODMAP pasta sauce is rated green if you would rather buy it than build it. For burgers, mix your own patties from plain mince, salt and pepper, and use chives or the green tops of spring onions for the sharpness the onion was providing.
Frequently asked questions
Is beef mince low FODMAP?
Plain mince is, at the amount tested, with nothing recorded in any group. Pre-seasoned mince, meatball mixes and anything sold as a taco or burger blend is a different product, and those routinely list onion powder, garlic powder or a rusk-based filler. Buy it plain and season it in the pan, and the answer stays as simple as it looks.
Why does steak upset my stomach if beef is low FODMAP?
Look past the meat at what came with it. A steak dinner tends to arrive alongside garlic butter, onion rings, a peppercorn sauce built on stock, or a very large plate of chips, and any of those is a likelier culprit. Size and richness count too, since a big, fatty, late meal is hard work for a sensitive gut whatever it is made of. Grill the same cut plainly to test it.
Is a burger low FODMAP?
The patty can be, if it is plain mince you shaped yourself. Everything stacked around it needs its own check: the bun, the relish, the fried onion, and especially the burger sauce, which is where onion powder tends to hide. A plain wheat tortilla or a lettuce wrap gets around the bun question, and mustard and ketchup are both rated green here.
Is slow-cooked beef stew low FODMAP?
The beef is no different after eight hours than it was at the start, because there is nothing in it to concentrate. The liquid is the question. Commercial beef stock is rated red on its onion and garlic base, and long cooking reduces that liquid rather than diluting it. Build the pot on a low FODMAP stock, red wine, tomato, carrot, bay and thyme, and let the meat do the rest.
