Basil (Fresh)

TLDRLast updated 4 September 2026

A quarter cup of basil leaves, 10 g, is rated green, with no FODMAP group showing a figure. That is a loosely packed handful, enough to finish two plates of pasta, so this is a herb you can be heavy-handed with. The trick is when it goes in: heat drives the aroma straight off, so basil belongs at the end of the cooking rather than the start.

Is basil (fresh) low FODMAP?

Leaves are not where a plant keeps its carbohydrate. Basil is picked young and eaten raw, and the tested quarter cup returns nothing across the six groups, which is the pattern for soft herbs generally. What makes the figure useful is its size: 10 g of leaves is a lot of basil, roughly a supermarket packet, and most recipes calling for it want about that much. Set it against the tablespoon that defines a serve of onion, where the same 10 g carries 0.4 g of fructans.

Basil (Fresh) and IBS: what to know

Dried basil is a different ingredient rather than a convenient version of the same one. Drying takes the water and the top notes away together, which is why the dried herb tastes closer to oregano, and why a spoonful of it stands for far more leaf than a spoonful of fresh; dried basil has its own entry. The other place basil arrives is a jar. Pesto is rated green at 2 tablespoons, 30 g, but only in the version made without garlic, and nearly every jar on the shelf has garlic in it. Bought tomato and basil sauces tell the same story.

Gut-friendly ways to eat basil (fresh)

Tomato, basil and olive oil make a complete sauce with no allium anywhere in it, which is the most useful thing basil does on this diet. Soften a tin of crushed tomatoes in garlic-infused oil with salt and a pinch of sugar, simmer it down, then tear the leaves in off the heat and give it a minute with the lid on. Tear rather than chop, since a blade bruises and blackens the cut edges. Keep the bunch on the bench in a glass of water, never in the fridge, where cold turns the leaves black overnight.

Frequently asked questions

Is pesto low FODMAP?

Only the garlic-free kind, and that qualifier decides it. Pesto made without garlic is green at 2 tablespoons, while traditional pesto is defined by the cloves, and one small clove of garlic carries 0.53 g of fructans. Pesto has its own entry with the label checks set out. Blitzing your own with garlic-infused oil standing in for the cloves is the reliable route, and a batch keeps under a film of oil.

Can I cook with basil or does it have to be raw?

You can cook it, you just lose most of what you paid for. The volatile oils that make basil smell like basil come off within a minute or two of heat, leaving a flat, faintly bitter green note behind. Stems are the exception: drop them into a simmering sauce for depth and fish them out before serving. Add the leaves last, and if the dish gets reheated tomorrow, add more then.

What can I use instead of basil?

It depends which basil job you mean. For the perfume over tomato and mozzarella nothing else quite does it, though fresh oregano or flat-leaf parsley will carry the plate. For Thai basil in a stir-fry, fresh mint and coriander together land closer than sweet basil does. Each of those has its own entry with its own tested serve, so the choice comes down to flavour rather than arithmetic.

Is basil paste in a tube low FODMAP?

Read it like any other jar. Tube basil is usually leaves, oil, salt and an acid, but plenty of brands add garlic, and the front of the pack says basil while the ingredient list says more. Our figure describes fresh leaves only. Tubes are also heavily salted and lose their top notes in processing, so they hold up in a cooked sauce and disappoint on a salad.
